The surgery to reverse type 2 diabetes will be performed by a surgical team headed by Dr. Jacobo Zafrani, one of the foremost laparoscopic and general surgeons in the Americas.
Doctor Zafrani’s Specialties are:
Bariatric or Weight loss and Metabolic Surgery – Minimal Invasive Surgery. He is licensed to perform surgeries in Costa Rica and Panama.
Education & Training:
Dr. Zafrani began his medical studies in UACA university, graduating in 1996 as a general practitioner.
After a successful career as a general practitioner, he continued his medical training and graduated from the University of Costa Rica in 2004 as a general surgeon.
He has continued his education, and he is in the second year of his doctoral thesis (medical science investigation) with Salamanca University.

Sleeve Gastrectomy training with Dr. Garnier (known as the “Father of Sleeve Gastrectomy”) at Cornell University in New York. 2005

Surgical experience and merits:
Dr. Zafrani has performed over 3500 surgeries. He performs approximately 300 bariatric surgeries per year. He is the first surgeon to have successfully performed a metabolic surgery in Central America, having done so in 2006. Since then, he has performed more than 200 surgeries, and he is the foremost surgeon for a multicenter study in this area.
The doctor is the founder and director of the first training center for minimal invasive surgery in Central and South America.
He is the representative of the Costa Rican chapter of the IFSO (International Federation for Obesity Surgery).
In addition, Doctor Zafrani is the coordinator of the first Laparscopic Surgery Post Graduate Course in Costa Rica.
